EMI brought the next challenge
After the Nik & Jay breakthrough, EMI approached the Nexus team about Alex. He had appeared on Popstars, but left the format and eventually signed a record deal with EMI instead.
Technically, Alex was a more traditional R&B singer than Nik & Jay. His impressive vocal control allowed Jon and Jules to explore new approaches to music and vocal production.
Them Girls and the full production package
Them Girls became one of the project's first defining tracks, combining Alex's vocals with the R&B and hip-hop aesthetic Nexus had developed.
Jules contributed both songwriting and music production to most of the project, including programming and arrangement. Nexus was credited as executive producer.
Thirteen as a production laboratory
Thirteen was an English-language EMI/Parlophone album featuring a more pure R&B sound, guest artists, rap features and a broader American-inspired approach.
Hvad Nu Hvis? and the UNICEF partnership
When UNICEF contacted Jon and Jules about a charity single, the idea for Hvad Nu Hvis? took shape. The inspiration came from something Jules's father, musician and protest singer Arne Würgler, had once told him: sometimes asking a question matters more than providing an answer.
That thought became the starting point for a song about people's need for security and their fear of losing it.
Jon and Jules decided Alex should be the lead artist, with Nik & Jay featured. Hvad Nu Hvis? was released in 2007 to support UNICEF, with all proceeds going directly to its work for children.
The song became a major hit and, by September 2010, had raised more than DKK 1.1 million for UNICEF.
A bridge to the next chapter of Nexus
Alex arrived when Nexus was still closely associated with Nik & Jay but was already starting to attract commissions from elsewhere.
It was an important stepping stone towards developing Joey Moe as a full Nexus artist and, later, working with established artists on external projects.
